Platforms for delivery of biomolecules and pharmaceuticals

Consideration of existing and novel strategies for delivery of anticancer agents including drugs & biomolecules (such as nucleic acids and homing peptides). An area of drug delivery that deserves further focus and efforts is the development of on-demand drug delivery platforms applicable to patients.

Particle Characterization and Formulation for Bulk Scale

Since, I am working in the area of cancer nanotechnology; I am much interested on NCI activities for discovering new nanoparticulate drug delivery systems and characterization of these systems.

 

The relevant areas of focus that need to be addressed include:

•Formulation of nanoparticles in bulk scale

•Actual biodistribution of nanoparticles

•Toxicity of nanoparticles

Improving Tumor Targeting

Many of the current targeting approaches (antibody/Fab, etc.,) are dependent on the EPR (enhanced permeability and retention) effect and not designed to increase extravasation of nanomedicines from the systemic circulation to extracellular space around tumors. Many nanomaterial platforms are now available thanks to the great work funded during the last 10-20 years. As others have stated, improved targeted delivery to tissues/cells of interest is needed. Specifically, intracellular delivery of drugs such as siRNA that cannot withstand naked transport.
